Chandrakanta, the epic Indian fantasy encompasses several aspects of story telling, through fictional world inhabited by fantastic creatures to beautiful maidens. In the 90s it used to be a hit played by the then hottie Sikha Swaroop. The original story was written by Devaki Nandan Khatri.Ā The copyright on the novel expired in 1964 and it is now in public domain, along with other titles by the author. Turns out the tv drama had little or no resemblance to the original story except for the names of a few characters being same.
Whatever the reason, the tv series went on in full swing until the producer ran out of money and the production had to be stalled.
The princess Chandrakanta was surrounded by a multitude of barons, knights and evilĀ sorcerers.Ā Though this does not sound unique, the drama had enough twists and turns to make it a fun show to watch. The book by itself takes inspiration for Hindu,Ā LevantĀ mythologies. Parts of it seemed like a hindu tale, while sometimes it felt like watching Arabian Nights.
Another catchphrase of the series was its title song. I remember it even to this day.
Needless to say, in those days of a single Indian national network. I used to be then onlyĀ live actionĀ show other than religious dramas that was fun for the kids.
