Teenage girls often harm themselves when depressed or anxious and they do this as an impulsive act, not giving it too much thought
A new research finds that deliberately self-harming among young girls is far more popular than previously thought. Findings showed that 1 in 10 UK female teenagers harm themselves, including self-poisoning, self injury (mostly self-cutting), overdose
or increased consumption of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks.
Most of the depressed and anxious kids who admitted to have deliberately harmed themselves said they did it as an impulsive act. Most of the teenagers admitted to have harmed themselves in order to “get relief from a terrible state of mind”, to “punish themselves” or to because they “wanted to die.” On the other hand, contrary to previous misconceptions, only a few adolescents in the study reported reasons such as to “get attention” or to “frighten someone.”
