Tribal people define the world that they know into human world and the world of the spirits . For them living life is not merely passing through the different phases of life , but cherishing each moment that we are passing . Beauty is define by feats that requires patience and sometimes pain . Foot binding for example was once practiced by Chinese women . The women with the smallest foot was considered the most beautiful. To the Karen people of Thailand and eastern Burma , long necks are a symbol of beauty . Achieving such long necks is a painful process of binding the neck with metallic rings . These rings causes constant bruising , itching of the neck area and might result to tumors or cancer . The reason why someone would push oneself to the brink of extreme pain is still a mystery to me . All I can say is their cultures have developed keeping in mind the spiritual and the unseen forces of nature that they revere.
